How well do you know your parents? 5 questions to ask them now.

Summer holidays are a fantastic time to reconnect with your family, whether you have the chance to catch up again at family gatherings or if you plan an annual getaway somewhere. A family reunion is an excellent opportunity to learn more about your parents and relatives.

Instead of having the same conversations you do every time you get together this summer, why not delve into your family's history? These stories are like hidden treasures waiting to be discovered, and they can strengthen the bonds that connect you.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. Do you have any dreams that you didn't live out? What happened? Do you regret not realizing your dream?

  2. What childhood experience(s) impacted your life the most? Either negatively or positively.

  3. What did you enjoy most about raising me/us? Do you have any specific memories or feelings that come up for you?

  4. What was the hardest lesson you've learned in life so far? How did it come about?

  5. Do you have any stories about your parents (my/our grandparents) that you haven't shared with me/us yet?

Depending on your family's history, these might not be common or comfortable conversations to have with each other. But could you start by asking your parents a few questions to initiate discussion and get to know them better?

As you engage in these conversations, consider including your aunts and uncles. Their unique insights, especially considering how well they knew your parents before you did, can be surprising and eye-opening, adding a new dimension to your understanding of your family.

That's all for now! Enjoy the rest of your summer.
